A podcast with Ashley Knowles

between2firewalls

The DMZ is the space between two firewalls, where the inside meets the outside. That's where security meets business, and that's the show.

Real security, in plain English, for people who run businesses. No pitch. Just the knowledge, given away.

Conversations

Guests who've actually done it. I'm lining up Australian software companies, charities and not-for-profits, Defence industry people, peers in the craft, and business-first operators learning security in public.

Unpacked

Two of us, one topic. My co-host's job is to play the smart, sceptical business owner: “Why should I care?” “What do I actually do on Monday?” “Isn't that just for big companies?” If they just agree with me, it's a lecture.

Topics on the list

Some of what I want to cover. No dates yet. Subscribe and you'll see them as they land.

  • Risk reduced beats risk documented: why tick-box security fails businesses
  • Do you actually need ISO 27001? When customers and tenders start demanding it
  • ISO 27001 vs the Essential Eight vs SMB1001: which one is actually for you?
  • When a big customer sends you a security questionnaire
  • The first hour of an incident: what to do and who to call
  • AI tools in your business: where does your data actually go?

The give, not the sell

I've worked in IT and security since 2003: Deloitte, Avanade, Leidos, and clients including BHP, Rio Tinto, ANZ and Defence. These days, through Securitribe, the work is for software and platform businesses, startups included. Now I bring it to businesses that don't normally get access to it, and this show is where I give it away.

Got a story worth an hour?

I'm after Australian businesses and practitioners who've been through it: the questionnaire, the certification, the incident, the first security hire. You don't need to be big. Charities on a charity budget are some of the best stories there are.
